So we got up early and got into costume and a few went on the subway and the rest of us piled into the car. First thing first, we got PULLED OVER before we were 10 blocks from my apartment. And we all swear it was because the cops wanted to see us, not because we had temporary plates and might have been driving a stolen car. Excuses!
I don't have a lot to say about NYAF once we got there, because I only went for the one day and most of it was taken up by masquerade stuff. I can say though, that I really enjoyed the masquerade. There were tons and tons of beautiful costumes, some great performances and (god forbid) well choreographed and rehearsed dance skits! I have mixed feelings about attending NYAF again based on other feedback, but if I could I'd go just to be in/watch the masquerade.
I also really really loved the whole judging and rehearsal set up. It was so easy and it didn't take all day. I'm used to AB, where once you check in you're there for life, so it was great to be able to rehearse and then get back out, eat, pee and see what my friends were up to. I really really really love having a rehearsal. Really. REALLY. Uh, anyway...
We won first place in the Craftsmen division, which is really cool. I was totally thrilled that there were 2 top Vampire Hunter D groups! Also cool! Poor D needs a little more love. I'm sad that I forgot all my rings though, but I guess I had enough other bling to make up for it.
( Here are a few pics and the skit video~ )The Negatives...
I wish I'd gotten to see a little bit more of the con, but judging from the stats on how many people were there Saturday (something like 21,000) I can see why I didn't! (But was there anything even to see? A lot of people are telling me there wasn't!) It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
ooooooo crowded. We braved the dealer's room, but by the time we got down one aisle we had to leave and go outside, because I was totally overheating and I've learned my lesson about overheating in D. The rest of the time before we checked in for judging was spent outside the convention proper in the entrance hallway. Getting anywhere was sort of a terror. I wonder how anyone in a bigger costume did it, really! It was incredibly frustrating.
And no fault of NYAF, but I hhhhhhhhhate the Javits center. We all agreed it's almost easier for us to go to Boston (or travel anywhere, really) than to go to NYAF, haha. But there's something about a local con that's so tempting at the same time. I dunno. We'll see.
So that's that. The costumes/skit two years in the making have finally been unleashed and I don't think there was a better place to do it. ^_^
EDIT: Jeez, I totally forgot! Thank you to my friends soooo much! Thanks to my chibi butler/slave for being such a trooper throughout the whole process of making/wearing D! And thanks to Joel for driving us around! And everyone else for being awesome! And Angela for being my most excellent partner-in-crime!
It was also great seeing all you people I saw, but am too lazy to list again! You know who you are. ^_^
